Basketball Day Camps in Slovakia Successfully Combine Tradition and Sport
Two highly successful basketball day camps were held in Slovakia as part of the ASSIST project, blending traditional games with basketball to engage young learners. These camps, conducted at Primary Schools in Cakajovce and Aleksince, offered innovative approaches to promoting physical activity, teamwork, and cultural appreciation among children.
Camp at Primary School Cakajovce
The first day camp took place on February 11, 2025, at Primary School Cakajovce, and was led by PE teachers Stefan and Radka. Enthusiastic children, aged 8-10, participated in this after-school program designed to encourage physical activity and collaboration.

Four interactive workshops were conducted, inspired by traditional games originating from Slovakia, Greece, and Turkey. These games were creatively adapted under the ASSIST project to include basketball elements, transforming familiar activities into exciting and educational experiences. Among the highlights, the children particularly enjoyed playing ‘Statues’ and ‘Chair Dance,’ as these well-loved games resonated strongly with them.
The use of basketball fundamentals alongside these traditional games added a unique layer to the activities, allowing children to develop their coordination and teamwork skills while having fun. The feedback gathered during the event, initially collected on paper, was later converted into digital surveys to ensure a unified analysis across all partner countries in the project.
The camp successfully created an enjoyable and impactful experience for the participants, fostering not only physical activity and social connections but also an appreciation for cultural heritage through sports.
Camp at Primary School Aleksince
The second day camp was organized on February 19-20, 2025, at Primary School Aleksince. Led again by PE teacher Radka , this camp saw the participation aged 8-11, and made excellent use of the school’s indoor playground to carry out its diverse activities.
Similar to the Cakajovce camp, this session featured four workshops that incorporated traditional games from Slovakia, Greece, and Turkey into basketball-focused activities. Both small-sized and standard basketballs were used during the sessions, ensuring that children of various skill levels were able to fully engage. For some participants, this was their first time holding a basketball, making the experience even more thrilling.

Notable games like ‘Statues’ and ‘Chair Dance’ were once again favorites among the children, captivating them with their familiar yet innovative approach. These traditional games, enriched by basketball drills, created an engaging platform for cultivating teamwork, coordination, and an interest in sports.
Feedback was again collected on paper and digitized for evaluation alongside camps held in other partner countries. This process ensured a consistent method for analyzing the program’s effectiveness and impact.

A Shared Vision
Both camps reinforced the ASSIST project’s mission to integrate traditional games with sports as a means of promoting inclusiveness, physical activity, and cultural awareness among young learners. The participants not only improved their teamwork and athletic skills but also gained a deeper appreciation for cultural diversity through playful learning experiences.
By offering these camps free of charge and encouraging participation from all, the ASSIST project is setting an example of how sports can be used to bridge gaps and inspire the next generation. The enthusiastic responses from both events highlight the potential for future initiatives blending tradition, teamwork, and innovative sports education.
